Hero Reflection

1. I don't think that there is any specific way to become a hero. There is no paperwork to fill out, there are no specifications, the definition of a hero differs from person to person. what makes a hero is a matter of perspective, for one person you just need to rescue a cat out of a tree, for another you need to save five human lives before you're a hero.

2. For this project we needed to find someone local who is a hero to us, and write about why they are heroic to us.

3. In order to get to the final product, we needed three other drafts with critiques. I was on time with all of my drafts, but I didn't have one of my critiques one time so that did delay me a little. But other than that I was fine.

4.From this process I learned how to write in one moment while covering things in other moments by using flashbacks. A problem that I encountered was that my hero didn't live very close to me but they were still local. So when I needed to get pictures of him, I needed to e-mail him asking him for pictures of himself.

5.I had to use perspective a lot. Luckily I know my Grandpa pretty well, so I could Think out some situations, and know how he would react. So if there was something that wasn't covered in the interview that I wanted to add into the story I could (to an extent)

6. Here is a link to guide you to my character sketch of my Grandpa: OMGWTFBBQTHISISALINK!!!

Character Sketch

It was August 17th 1980; the “Viking 1” mission to Mars was being shut down after being in Mars’s orbit for two years longer than expected.
Memories of working on the Viking flooded my mind. My head was swimming with the thought that I, Ralph Proud JR, had been a part of this major success. I sat deep in my chair, falling back seven years to when I had worked on it. Though I wasn’t able to see the fire burst from the underside of the launcher as it pierced the stratosphere before it completed its journey to the red planet about a year later, I still had the knowledge that I helped it on its way to completing the grand purpose for this piece of work. I worked for two years, putting who knows how many hours of labor for the mission, and so much has been learned, and can be learned from it.
I worked on the Central Command System (CCS); I had programmed this part of the Viking. A new force began to build in my chest, it was swelling as if there had been a gargantuan mosquito that bit me, going straight for the heart, but because of its not actually existing, there was no itch. Without the CCS the orbiter part of the Viking would not have known what to do, it would have just hung there in space, a million dollar paper weight, it wouldn’t have moved, wouldn’t have sent any data back to earth, wouldn’t have done any scanning, wouldn’t have dropped the Lander part either. But this was not an issue as I had done my job properly and it functioned just as it was expected to.
It had been built so well that it was able to go two years longer than we thought it would, during which time Mars was behind the sun relative to the Earth, and we were able to learn about the sun’s atmosphere. Amazing how you can discover things when you aren’t trying to, or are looking for something else.
I was astonished at my own capabilities, what the team was able to accomplish, what we learned and what we can learn because of this one mission. I let it all sink in to me as I made my way back into the present. It truly was an incredible feeling, that my work has made an impact on science, possibly even humanity. I didn’t expect a Nobel Prize, and I didn’t get one either, it would have been too much anyway.
I was more than content with my life, what I did was in the past, I must now look to what I can do in the future. Success is wonderful, but what can I use from this experience to make my next work even better? This is the ultimate question that I ask myself, and challenge my children with. There is no such thing as perfection, so how could it be better?

The Origin of Nothing

These articles were a very interesting read.I thought it was neat to see how different cultures displayed zero, the Babylonians with two wedges, the Mayans with an eye-like shape, the Chinese with a circle, etc. Who discovered zero? The Babylonians most would say, and I can't argue with that answer, but the Mayans also discovered it, they just didn't discover it first. But is zero complete with just a symbol, is zero just a place holder, or is it another number that has its own meaning? I think that the person who said what does zero stand for, is the true discoverer of zero. How the rest of the world got zero without an "efficient" mean of communication is no surprise to me. They would communicate this information like they would any other, people tell stories, people travel places simply in search for new knowledge, things get around one way or another.

Night Presence

Catching the signal from one of her friends, Angela brushed her skirt, took a deep breath and walked towards where he was sitting. She had done this many times before; this was just another one of her assignments. She walked up and snapped his neck. He dropped to the ground like a sack of potatoes and she quickly threw him over her shoulder and leapt to the rooftops where she wouldn’t be followed. "Hopefully this will b the last of these stupid assignments" She sighed as she continued up the building. After running a few blocks to make sure that she was a safe distance away from the scene she hid the body and waited until 3:45 am when a small amount of people were awake and traveled to the meeting spot where she could complete her mission. She arrived at the destination at 4:15 am Clarence, the one who had signaled to her earlier, was already there, beside her was a taller figure, masked by the darkness that occurs only at this time in the early morning. Angela knelt before the figure, laying the body before it not as it were a dead man, but as if she was handing him an ancient artifact that would shatter if it dropped even an inch to the ground.
“Master, I have brought you the body you asked for, now will you teach me elemental mastery?” Angela asked as if a peasant were asking the emperor of China for his palace.
“Very nice work Angela,” The figure said bending over inspecting the body carefully “I appreciate you disposing of Robert Pattinson, Those teenage girls were disturbing my meditation and now hopefully they will shut up about their precious Robert Pattinson” he stated practically spitting fire with each mention of his name. He swiftly turned around. He seemed to be very deep in thought about something, perhaps her next assignment. The wind played with Angela’s hair as he looked over his shoulder, sighed, turned back around and said, “Very well, You shall learn a basic skill” Her body vibrated with the thought that the master, who picked one out of a million students to learn even the most basic of skills, Clarence’s eyes went wide as saucers as her mouth gaped, looking for its tongue. Finally she squeaked out,
“M-Master, you ca-“
“SILENCE!” He roared turning to her. She immediately closed her mouth, backed up five meters, and bowed before him. “I will not have you disrespecting my judgments” He said through gritted teeth
“I’m sorry master it’s just that-“
“SILENCE!” he roared again, sparks were jumping from his fist which looked like solid stone. “I believe that Angela has proven herself to be loyal enough that she can be trusted with this power, it is not usual for me to take more than one student I understand, but I must challenge myself once in a while. If you disagree then you are free to leave whenever you feel proper, but remember the consequences of deserting.” With each sentence finished he took another step towards her until he was only a foot away from her. She did not move from her position and she wouldn’t dare interrupt him again and suffer his punishment.
“Y-Yes master, of course” Clarence was a statue, didn’t move or make eye contact, just made sure she didn’t slip up again.
“Good” The shadowy figure said coolly, his hands relaxed and Angela found it a little bit easier to breathe. “Your training shall start as soon as you arrive at the dojo” The figure faded out, Angela stood up straight and started on her path for vengeance.

The Death of Family

I heard a horn honk, and disappointment filled me as I realized that my dad was here to pick me up. My best friend Josh who was like a brother to me sat beside me and said with sorrow in his voice,
“Sounds like your parents are here to pick you up.” His two dogs ran out to greet the stranger that had arrived outside their gate. He had arrived earlier than I had expected so I still needed to roll up my purple sleeping bag and gather the video games that I had brought over for Josh and I to play. I took as long as I could dragging out what little time I had left with my friend before I had to leave. Finally I was ready to go and had no more excuses for why I had to stay a little longer. I walked alongside Babu and Neo (my friend’s two dogs) to my dad’s silver Lexus.

Though it was dark, the air had a still sadness to it, and my father’s gloomy outline was clear as day. I walked toward him practically tasting the misery coming off of him.

“What’s wrong?” I asked him as trouble was written all over it.

“Beau is dead,” He replied. His words punched me in the gut, and the night seemed to get cooler

“You’re kidding right,” I asked out of utter disbelief. He just shook his head and said,

“I would never joke about something like that”. I could feel the tears building up and trying to push out of my eyes, and I could barely hold them back. I reluctantly got into the car and could smell the salty sadness running down my checks, blurring my vision.

“How did he die?” I was able to choke out through my streaming face.

“He got hit by a car. We can’t find a wound so we think it broke his neck. He didn’t suffer.” My dad said to me. I could see that he was crying as well; Beau was his canine play buddy. My father made a few more desperate attempts to comfort me as well as himself, we both were a mess. Beau was my little puppy for six years and it only took a day for him to disappear.

The Beach of Beautiful Noise

It starts with a small trickle, growing louder, then whoosh. A wave crashes down onto the shore, creating shock waves through out the beach. The pulsating noise of the water over comes me. Crashing or simply sliding over the sand, I feel it though it never touches my body. It washes my mind of troubles, as if it were cleansing water. It continues to flow, drawing back only to strike again. There is a small pause, I hear something else for a change, a flag flying in the wind? It doesn't last and soon the roar of the waves are back upon me. They make sure that I realize who is the dominant sound there, them, the water. I feel it pushing and pulling through the sand, trying to reach out and consume the world as if it were an evil mastermind. My heart is following the waves, aching when they leave, and growing as they return. I never realized how beautiful the melodies of the tides were, but i never took the time to realize that they could be beautiful. The waves continue to return, a faithful servant to my hearts want for it's music. Spending eternity on this beach would be easy, but alas the music dies down, and the rest of the world takes over.

The source of the sound

The Locker Problem Solution

The Locker Problem

There are 1000 lockers, and if the first student opens all of the lockers, the second closes every other, the third changes the state of every third, and so on, there are going to be 31 lockers left open and969 closed. The lockers left open will be 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, etc. until we reach 961. All of the numbers that we listed are perfect squares meaning that a number is multiplied by itself to get that number, for example 12, 22, 32, 42, etc. The reason why only the perfect squares are left open is because they have an odd number of factors. So the locker is going to get open, close, opened, or open, close, open, close, opened, or however long it takes. I’ll use 16 and 18 as examples and will illustrate them in the diagram below. 18 has the factors, 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 18. Every one of these factors has a pair, 1x18, 2x9, 3x6, so it goes, open, close, open, close, open, closed. 16 has the factors 1,2,4,8, and 16. The pairs are 1x16, 2x8, but 4 is left by itself, it is the square root of 16. This is why the square numbers are left open; they have that square root, giving them an odd number of factors. There was another pattern that was found, but the flaw was that it would have taken too long to measure on a large scale. The pattern, staring with locker one, was 1 open, 2 closed, 1 open, 4 closed, 1 open, 6 closed, 1 open, 8 closed, etc.

If the diagram seems confusing, here is how to read it. The first row shows the locker #, below that shows the first student opening every locker, below that shows the next person who touched that locker and if they open or closed it. If there is a c next to/below the number, that student closed it, same for o except open instead of close. If there is nothing in the box, then it won’t be touched anymore and you know whether it is open or closed

My Weekend

This has been a horrible weekend! First off, that little bitch, lily runs off to god knows where, and the police don't know a damned thing. Not only that but she was able to sneak Rosaleen out of jail! Well technically she was in the hospital, but she was still servin' time for pouring her snuff all over them white men's boots, the stupid woman.
I went to talk to "Shoe" at the station and one of his men who was supposed to be guarding the door to Rosaleen's room got tricked into heading back to the station while my bitch daughter snuck her out. They's almost as stupid as Rosaleen, fallin' for Lily's dumb act.
And to top all of this off, Peach sales were low. I sold five peaches on Saturday, five peaches, and I've been hearing rumors that people think I've been abusin' Lily and that's why she ran away. Lily ran away because the fool thought that her mother was gonna protect her, she just can't stand the fact that her mama is dead, and she's just gonna have to live with it.

What is Math, and Physics

Math is a way for us to simplify things in life, by giving numerical values to everything. I cannot think of one thing that does not have some sort of math that is involved in it. The thing about math though, is that it is very general. Math can take many different forms, graphs, shapes, and even money. Math is everywhere and everybody uses it, even if we don't know it, if we buy something we have to do price - money = 0 when purchasing something. Construction workers have to work with blueprints and cut wood, but that still uses math, if you have a 13 foot plank and you need 7 feet, you know to cut off 6 feet. Sorry if it seems redundant, but math is EVERYWHERE.

Physics is how we explain how our planet works. How we explain why we don't fly off to the moon when we jump, or why a car will keep rolling if the driver lets go of the gas and doesn't hit the brakes. There really is no "doing" physics it is just how our world works, Just like you don't "do" gravity, it just is there. Physics apply anywhere as long as you are are a human (nobody knows how physics apply to aliens). When you're driving fast in a car and you make a sharp right turn, your body goes left because of cetripetal force, which is a part of physics.
Math and physics both relate very closely and both apply eveywhere on earth, what is explained above is what Math and physics are.

My Favorite Fictonal Hero

My favorite fictional hero is Hiro Nakamura from the TV show Heroes. He is a japanese buisness man until the fateful day of the eclipse when Hiro discovered his power. What his power is, is the ability to manipulate time and space, to put it simply, he can teleport and stop time.
He is my favorite hero because he is smart, clumsy, and has the ability that i have always wanted. He always dreamed that he would do something big in the world, and he reached his ambition, he was part of a team that saved the world from the menace Sylar. I think he is amazing because he has such a big heart and refuses to kill anyone or allow anyone to be killed.
Hiro is speacial because he has the potential to do anything with this power, but he chose to fight against evil instead of fighting for it. I think that with as much power as he has the potential for it would be hard not to become power hungry or money loving, so he also has amazing will power to accomplish the tasks that he does.Hiro is just amzing and if I could change places with him I would any time!
